The Wanakena Footbridge

Wanakena Footbridge Sign

Wanakena Footbridge

Built c. 1902 by the Rich Lumber Co., this suspension bridge spans 171 feet between the supporting towers and was constructed to make access to the mill, residential and commercial areas of Wanakena.

In 1999, the Wanakena Footbridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One horrible day in January 2014, the ice came down the river and destroyed the bridge.  Through the huge efforts of many State and Town officials, locals, visitors and most especially the Wanakena Historical Association, there were grants and fundraising to rebuild the bridge.  On July 4, 2017, many gathered in Wanakena for their annual Fourth of July parade.  First things first, they were able to celebrate the rebuilding of their beloved bridge.  The Town has many, many people, and organizations to thank for making the new bridge possible!
